The different approaches only prove that India is indeed a land of cultural confluence. The article explores the most popular styles in which the entire look of the saree may be enhanced.
This is perhaps the most common style of wearing a saree and is widely seen across India. The sari is wrapped around the waist, with pleats in the front. The remaining part of the saree is neatly folded and pinned on the left shoulder. This style has been popularized by the media and is undeniably the archetypal Indian style.
The different states across India have an innate style of draping the saree. A few of them are explored as below:
Kerala is a treasure trove for tourists and enthusiasts of Indian culture. If you have been captivated by the traditional boat race, exquisite flower carpets and mouthwatering delicacies, the traditional attire cannot be far behind. Kerala saree is unique in that it is essentially a cream colored saree with golden zari border. Womenfolk in Kerala are often seen wearing this saree in the Indian style with a green or red blouse. The traditional attire however comprises two pieces of cream colored cloth, one of which is wrapped around the waist and the other is draped on the shoulder.
The Indian style of wearing a saree is witnessed in most parts of Karnataka. The saree is tucked to the waist and the pallav is pinned on the left shoulder. In some parts of Karnataka, unmarried girls wear a 'half-saree' or 'daavani' which is a traditional long skirt and blouse. The veil wrapped from the waist and pinned on the left shoulder makes it look like the saree. There is however a distinct style witnessed in Coorg and Chickmangalore districts. The womenfolk drape the saree in a peculiar fashion. In Coorg the saree is worn with pleats at the rear. The front portion remains plain and neatly tucked around the waist. The remaining length of the saree is wrapped around the chest, brought to the right shoulder and pinned downward. The other variety seen in Chickmangalore is similar to the Coorg style, the only difference being the position of the pleats which are retained in the front. The traditional kanjeevaram saris from Tamil Nadu enhance the look of this elegant style. Mysore silk and cotton sarees are the other varieties of sarees popular in Karnataka.
The traditional Maharashtrian outfit; is a nine meter saree draped in a peculiar fashion. The center of the 9 meter saree, held lengthwise is placed at the center back. The ends are then brought forward and tied securely. The two ends are then wrapped around the legs. The remaining part of the sari is wrapped around the chest with the end covering the head.
Tamil Nadu is yet another state of rich culture. The sari here is complemented with a pinkosu, or pleated rosette, worn around the waist. Most women wear the Indian style but the traditional Tamil style of wearing a saree known as 'Madisar' is distinct and a 9 meter saree is used. There are two different styles of wearing a saree in Tamil Nadu:
The Iyengar style saree is worn around the waist. It is then brought back, pleated and positioned along the left leg. The rest of the saree is worn over the left shoulder, wrapped once again round the waist and tucked on the left side.
On the other hand, the lyer style comprises similar steps but the pleats are tucked at the back and the pallu is pinned on the right shoulder. Kanjeevaram silks, traditional cotton woven sarees and mixed cotton sarees are ideal for this style.
Although traditionally, Gujarati women wear, two-piece attire; profuse with kutchi work there is a typical way in which the five and half meter saree is draped in Gujarat. It resembles the nivi style with the loose end being draped over the right shoulder rather than the left. The Gujarati saree is draped in the Indian style but the pallav is worn back-to-front. This is indeed a good option to wear to traditional events in Gujarat, more so if you do not wish to wear the traditional two-piece. Banarasi silk, sanganeri prints and Bandhini sarees are best suited for this particular style. The very stylish designer sarees in chiffon and georgette are also a good option.
Have you been contemplating how to wear a Bengali saree? Here is how the Bengali saree is draped. It begins with a basic tuck followed by making reversed pleats where the fall remains down. Bengalis usually wear bordered sarees. So care should be taken to keep the border straight and make pleats of equal size. This part goes up on the left shoulder. The inner side of the pleats is used to cover the blouse and give it the Indian - saree look. The remaining part of the pleats present at the back is brought under the right arm and pinned on the right shoulder. Bengali Saris often depict the sun, moon and stars in their patterns. The most well known varieties are the Calcutta saris, Baluchari saris, Daccai Jamdani and other Jamdani varities.
Although saree is the quintessential attire that embodies the Indian woman, the varying styles epitomize its innate diversity. The article may not have covered all the different styles. It is rightly said that the traditions in India; like its cuisine can never be summed up in one article.
