    Cutting for a stone

'Cutting for a stone' is a much acclaimed novel written by Abraham Verghese. The story has been mined out of his experiences in Ethiopia. In a very mysterious turn of events, Sister Mary Joseph Praise is pregnant. Her friendship with the leading Surgeon of the Mission (miss spelt missing hospital) Thomas Stone; resulted in her mysterious pregnancy & traumatic childbirth where she loses her life. She gives birth to twins, Marion & Shiva, raised by two Indian doctors after their father goes missing. Growing up in an environment of medicine, it is but natural for the two boys to take up medicine. With their shared interest for medicine, the orphaned twins come of age as Ethiopia floats on the threshold of revolution. But love plays spoilsport in the camaraderie of the two boys. They are torn between their love for the same woman & circumstances force Marion to flee his homeland. He finds refuge as an intern at an underfunded & overcrowded New York City hospital. As he prepares himself to leave the past in the backburner, he realizes that the past is out to get him. The resurfacing of his past is almost going to kill him and he must entrust his life to the two men he least trusted. The two men were his father who deserted the boys and twin brother who betrayed him. 'Cutting for stone' is an extraordinary story of a man's life and an epic about power, wealth, beauty, passion and the art of healing others. The book sure has its delightful moments, yet like any other saga this one being set in a hospital, has heartbreak, pain and loss as a regular feature. The political disharmonies, civil war and revolutions are an integral part of this novel. Few stories unfold in Boston and New York and at different points of time Ethiopia, Boston and New York are home to Marion, the narrator of the book. I have thoroughly enjoyed the descriptive narration, the remarkable characters, their struggle and the many incredible instances and intriguing ways in which the story unfolds.
