The success of the few Junior Departments in existence toward the close of the nineteenth century proved what might and ought to be done to help boys and girls who were too old for the Primary Department and too young to be merged with the "Main School" with adolescents and adults. As the Cradle Roll provides for the babies, the Beginners' Department for little children not in public school, the Primary Department for school children, unable to use the Bible easily and intelligently as their text-book, so the Junior Department provides for the reading boys and girls, who should be taught to use the Bible, not only as a text-book, but as daily companion and guide. A Sunday School is short sighted if it fails to provide for definite work for that period of life when pupils are first able to really study a Bible lesson.
