The Garden Of Solitude Book Description

About the Book :

The Garden of Solitude is a poignant tale of a Kashmiri Pandit family driven away from the Valley in the wake of armed insurgency and political turmoil. Sridar, a young Pandit boy, is torn apart as he reluctantly leaves his home situated in the beautiful Valley along with his family. The family, like the other Pandits, settles in Jammu, where an entire generation of Pandits spends the rest of their lives suffering from a sense of loneliness and alienation. The older people are shattered due to the forced migration and many of them suffer from dementia as a consequence.

Sridar soon begins to find solace in his writings and leave Jammu to pursue full-time writing. However, his love for his homeland brings him back to Kashmir; he is now writing a book on Pandit migration. He is pained to see how the forced migration to Jammu has transformed the once prospering and happy community of Pandits into a pained and estranged populace. Troubled by his tumultuous past, he is now trying to find answers to the questions that define him.

The first novel in English written by a Kashmiri Pandit about the political turmoil in Kashmir, migration of Pandits and their life and plight in exile.

  • Well-etched out characters.
  • A moving narration of the psychological bearing migration had on the Pandits.
  • The pain of forced separation from the homeland and the rise of separatism in the valley is well-traced.

This book is the coming of age of a Kashmiri Exile who has gone onto research on existential questions after having to know of the plight and pain which the kashmiri pandits had to go through after their forced migration from kashmir. Pain and Conflicts always force an individual to question his identity and the purpose of his existence and whether an individual is on any purposeful path. Siddhartha also went through the same through the protagonist Sridar in the book. Siddhartha also does not deny that sridar is a completely fictitious entity. New age first time Indian authors are increasingly penning down their journey of individual self-discovery through means of a fictionalized reality where the questions facing them are juxtaposed with the circumstances of characters created by the author. In exploration of sridar's questions and his desire to seek answers, siddhartha has effectively put down on print the questions which face every other individual around on planet earth. However, this is where the book falters in that, it tried to achieve two different objectives viz., highlighting the plight and pain of the kashmiri pandits and the consequent loss of identity, as also an individual's search for meaningful existence. The book slightly goes off the point in amalgamating the two objectives effectively. However siddhartha as a writer is surely one to look forward to, if one goes by the depth of his words as expressed in various letters between characters in the book.
