Set against the turbulent years of the Napoleonic era, Alexandre Dumas's thrilling adventure story is one of the most widely read romantic novels of all time. In it the dashing young hero, Edmond Dantes, is betrayed by his enemies and thrown into a secret dungeon in the Chateau d'If -- doomed to spend his life in a dank prison cell. The story of his long, intolerable years in captivity, his miraculous escape, and his carefully wrought revenge creates a dramatic tale of mystery and intrigue and paints a vision of France -- a dazzling, dueling, exuberant France -- that has become immortal.

The Count of Monte Cristo is an amazing story written by 19th century novelist Alexandre Dumas. Written in 1844 and set in the post Napoleon Era, this story is an amazing account of jealousy, revenge, and justice. The main protagonist of this story is Edmond Dantes, who is an ambitious and young sailor of nineteen years on board the ship Le Pharaon on a voyage. Unfortunately, the captain of the ship takes ill and dies. In the turn of events, Edmond Dantes is promoted as the captain of the ship. When the ship returns to Marseille, Edmond and the beautiful Mercedes have plans to marry. However, another person Ferdinand Mondego along with Danglars, a shipmate on the Pharaon, plot against Edmond Dantes. Mondego yearns for Mercedes while Danglars is jealous of Dante as captain of the ship. As a result of this plot, Edmond Dante is falsely accused of being a Bonapartist and is arrested on the day of his wedding. Utilizing the dishonesty of public prosecutor Villefort, he is imprisoned in the Chateau D'If, and is held for 14 years. During his imprisonment, Abbe Faria, an Italian priest actually digs into Dante’s cell while planning his own escape. The pair befriends each other and Faria teaches Edmond many things including History, Mathematics, Philosophy, impeccable manners, and even swordsmanship amongst other things. Faria falls mortally ill and dies, but before his death, he lets Edmond know about a treasure buried on an island called Monte Cristo. Edmond Dante manages to escape the notorious prison and finds the hidden treasure. Now that Edmond Dante is rich, he starts planning his revenge against the people who turned his life into misery. The story proceeds further as Edmond Dante as Count of Monte Cristo and also using other aliases exacts revenge on his perpetrators. The manner in which he does this is very complicated and in the end his enemies are utterly ruined. This novel has been made into many films, and is even popular to this day.
