His many books include "The Olympics: A History of the Modern Games, Games and Empires: Modern Sports and Cultural Imperialism" (Columbia), and a translation of Peter Khnst's "Sports: A Cultural History in the Mirror of Art." He lives in Leverett, Massachusetts.
