Jimmie Durham was born in 1940 in Arkansas. A member of the Cherokee Nation, he was brought up in a family of carvers and political activists. Durham spent the late 60s performing, writing and editing poetry in Houston, Texas, and in the 70s his work for the American Indian Movement led to the drafting of the International Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. As part of a first generation of contemporary First Nations artists working in elite high-art contexts, Durham's contribution has been compounded by his activities and lucidity as a writer, editor and critic.
