Anthem Book Description

Rand was a Russian born American author who pioneered the philosophy of "objectivism." Anthem is a futuristic science fiction novella. Man is in a dark age, because of earlier socialistic values. Technology is carefully planned and rarely allowed to advance. Individualism has almost ceased to exist. The theme of individualism versus collectivism runs throughout the novella.

    Individualism and society

“Anthem” by Ayn Rand is published in 1938 for the first time and then a revised edition in 1946 after the success of The Fountainhead. Basically the book explores the author’s imagination for the future of mankind There is no individualism. The story is written as a diary of a young man named Equality 7-2521 who lives in future. There are no words like I or mine. Everyone is brothers and working together in a groups. and their life is dictated by councils. He is curious and want to find individualism. But this leads to many complications in his life. He is joined there by his love, a girl called Liberty 5-3000. In fact, his life is under danger but they make new research and rediscover the lost language. They rename as Prometheus and Gaea. They discover a world with individual freedom. This is totally a new concept that Rand introduced. The writing is brilliant and easy to understand. The description of the society and the people is awesome. When all work together in one and no individualism, this appears good sometimes and sometimes bad. What I liked most about the story was, instead of using words such as I, me, him, her, or my, everyone used words such as, We, ours, them they. We may have this type of world in future where people will live their life according to the councils or society. This book has a very powerful message that make you think about your society and government. A definite read…….
