House of Mirth Book Description

House of Mirth is the story of Lily Bart, who seeks the acceptance of society women but doesn't have the money to really gain their approval. The novel is not so much the study of high society as it is a an examination of society's debasement of people and moral values. On the surface, Lily seems doomed because of her moral indiscretions, but the real reason is her lack of money. She remains a part of society as long as she has a chance of inheriting her aunt's fortune; when the money doesn't materialize, she is dropped. This scathing novel of manners was one of the first to emerge in American literature. Newly designed and typeset in a modern 6-by-9-inch format by Waking Lion Press.

From the esteemed author of The Age of Innocence--a black comedy about vast wealth and a woman who can define herself only through the perceptions of others. Lily Bart's quest to find a husband who can satisfy her cravings for endless admiration and all the trappings of the rich comes to a scandalous end when she is accused of being a wealthy man's mistress.

Edith Wharton has contributed to House of Mirth as an author. Edith Wharton was born in 1862 into one of New York's older and richer families and was educated here and abroad. Her works include "The Age of Innocence, Ethan Frome, The House of Mirth, " and "Roman Fever and Other Stories." As a keen observer and chronicler of society, she is without peer. Edith Wharton died in France in 1937.
