PREFACE THIS book is intended to supply in convenient form general inforlnation regarding the subject of field crops, for use in agricultural schopls and in elementary courses in colleges. It is in no sense a complete or exhaustive trea tise on the subject, such as would be desired for regular college courses in field crops. In the authors judgment, the most effective method of presenting the subject of field crops to students in ele mentary courses is by the combination textbook and lec ture plan, the textbook to fnrnish basic information, and the lectar-e to include such specific information as the instuctcoares to give. In very elementary courses, the textbook would probahly fnrnish the principal source of instruction. In presenting t, he subject of field crops to shudents of short or two-year courses in agricultural colleges, it is necessary, on account of the vast ai iount of experimental data which is accu l ulatin a g n d constantly changing, to devote a large part of the time allowed to the course to information of this sort, which leaves but little time for yresenting the mare elementary phases of the subject. A rnore complete and satisfactory course can, in the authorys opinion, be given if the studcnt by the aid of a general textbook can acquire these elemeptary facts outside of class hours. The elementary courses Inay be made very complete, if desired, by the use of such a text book, and the devoting of the major part of the lecture periods to the consideration of experimentd results in general, to the making of local applications and the applying of the principles of plaut physiulvgy and plant-breeding to field crops. Many students in field crop courses, both inagricnltural schools and colleges, have come fwln town or city homes, and have had little or no farm experience. While it is not possible to acquire farm experience fronr a textbook, it is possible to gain from such a source much of the general information which is lacking. In the writing of this book there has been inclnded but little statistical matter and but little experimental data, which can be presented in a mote up-to-date form by means of lectures. As the book was originally written, it contained sorne discussion of all of the North dmet can field crops, but in order to keep it within a reasonable size, it has, been necessary to otnit some of them, the most important of which am sugar cane and tobacco. The author has observed, first as a student and later as an instructor, that the interest which the student feels in any subject depends la gelyu pon whether or not the subject matter is presented in an att, ractive manner. For that reason he has illeluded in t, his book solnervhat in detail some facts mhich are of interest but not generally considered of vital impnptance. It is hoped that t kis book will prove useful as a general textbook of field crops in elementary courses, and as a supplementary textbook in othey courses, for students with little or no elemer t arkyn olvledge of the subject. 1 azn indebted to C.
