The editor has spelled out ampersands and made superscript letters lowercase. The novel, which is fully annotated, is followed by the two canceled chapters that comprise Persuasion 's original ending. "Backgrounds and Contexts" collects contemporary assessments of Jane Austen as well as materials relating to social issues of the period. Included are an excerpt from William Hayley 's 1785 "Essay on Old Maids"; Austen 's letters to Fanny Knight, which reveal her skepticism about marriage as the key to happiness; Henry Austen 's memorial tribute to his famous sister; assessments by nineteenth-century critics Julia Kavanagh and Goldwin Smith, who saw Austen as an unassuming, sheltered, "feminine," rural writer; and the perspective of Austen 's biographer Geraldine Edith Mitten. "Modern Critical Views" reflects a dramatic shift in the way that twentieth-century scholars view both Austen and Persuasion. Increasingly, the focus is on Austen's moral purposefulness and political acumen and on Persuasion's historical, social, and political implications. A variety of perspectives are provided by A. Walton Litz, Marilyn Butler, Tony Tanner, Robert Hopkins, Ann W. Astell, Claudia L. Johnson, and Cheryl Ann Weissman. A Selected Bibliography is also included.

Jane Austen’s Persuasion is an unusual novel for Austen but definitely one of my favorite. This is one of the last novel that Austen wrote. She was bed-ridden for months before her death. This novel was written at that time. Persuaion follows the same formula as all Austen novel but Anne Elliot's character is very different other heroines of Austen’s novels. Anne Elliot is livelier than ever. Anne is a perfect young woman with maturity and integrity. She is born in a proud family. Anne has loved Wentworth eight years ago but she rejected him as he is penniless and low in social status. She rejected him after the arguments and protests of her family against her beloved. After eight years, Captain Wentworth returns from service in the British navy, richer, better looking and with popularity and respect that he has gained on duty. Anne is unmarried and she finds that she still loves him but the man seems less than interested. Anne quietly regrets over her decision of turning back on her lover. I was a bit eager if Captain Wentworth will accept her or not. But finally, in the last chapter he shows his love for Anne. So, the novel has happy ending just like Austen’s other novels. The prose is serious throughout. The loneliness of Anne, days after jilting Wentworth, Anne’s state of mind after Wentworth’s return, distraction of Wentworth are very touchy portions of the book. The story is touching and pretty good. Beautiful love story that blossoms after eight long years. There are small twists but predictable. Nevertheless, it is a good book to read on lazy days. I become a die-hard fan of Jane Austen for inevitable his contribution in writing.
