Majorie Agosin is a poet, writer, critic, and human rights activist, a descendant of European Jews who escaped the Holocaust to Chile; she spent Pinochet's dictatorship in exile. She obtained her Ph.D. from Indiana U. and is Professor of Spanish at Wellesley. In 1990 she received the Jeanneta Rankin Award for Achievement in Human Rights. In 1995 she was awarded the Letra D'Oro Prize and the Latina Literature Prize. Her books include "Miriam's Daughters: Jewish Latin American Women Poets, Lluvia en el desierto/Rain in the Desert, and "These Are Not Sweet Girls: Latin American Women Poets.
