DEAD SOULS, first published in 1842, is the great prose classic of Russia. That amazing institution, "the Russian novel," not only began its career with this unfinished masterpiece by Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol, but practically all the Russian masterpieces that have come since have grown out of it, like the limbs of a single tree. Dostoevsky goes so far as to bestow this tribute upon an earlier work by the same author, a short story entitled "The Cloak"; this idea has been wittily expressed by another compatriot, who says: "We have all issued out of Gogol's Cloak."

About the Author :

Nikolai Vasil Evich Gogol has contributed to Dead Souls as an author. Peter Constantine was awarded the 1998 PEN Translation Award for "Six Early Stories by Thomas Mann and the 1999 National Translation Award for "The Undiscovered Chekhov: Forty-Three New Stories, and has been widely acclaimed for his recent translation of the complete works of Isaac Babel. His translations of fiction and poetry have also appeared in "The New Yorker, "Harper's, "Grand Street, "Paris Review, "Fiction, "Harvard Magazine, "Partisan Review, and "London Magazine, among others. He lives in New York City.
