In the introduction Liza Dalby describes the kimono's transformation from daily clothing to formal wear over the course of the 20th century. Her personal experiences give us a glimpse of the meanings the kimono has for the geisha.

Liza Dalby has contributed to Kimono as an author. Anthropologist (PhD Stanford) and writer (Geisha, Tales of Murasaki) best known for having become the the only westerner ever to become a geisha. Her story was dramatized on US network TV. In 2004 served as geisha consultant to film of Arthur Golden's novel, Memoirs of a Geisha.
