King Coal is about modern feudalism; about a mining company in the early twentieth century keeping control of worker serfs while company management behave as medievel lords. Like an ancient kingdom, workers live in company villages; they must purchase all their needs from company stores and remain continuously indebted to the management. The company goes out of its way to keep brutal control of the workers, stripping away privacy by maintaining methodically detailed accounts of each individual. Every worker is expected to show total loyalty and give their lives to the enterprise if need be. The few control the masses with raw, base savagery. At the turn of the twentieth century, Upton Sinclair illuminated the plight of the common worker and led the call for social reforms at a time when industry fat cats were at the zenith of their power. His pen was truly mighty and his books brought about improvements to the lives of thousands. Beyond his famous investigative and political activist books, Upton Sinclair was a prolific writer, publishing ninety books in multiple genres over his lifetime.
