Excerpt: ... ST. PAUL'S SECOND IMPRISONMENT AT ROME. For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.--2 Tim. iv. 6. The history of St. Paul subsequent to the last record in the Acts of the Apostles is exceedingly obscure. We have hitherto moved with confidence in the open and well-lighted path of authentic history. We are now to grope and wind our way through historical probabilities and deductions by the aid of scattered and feeble rays of testimony. We conclude that St. Paul was liberated from his imprisonment at Rome from a passage in the Epistle to the Hebrews. He was then in Italy or at liberty, for he writes, "they of Italy salute you;" and he says of Timothy, "Know ye that our brother Timothy is set at liberty, with whom, if he come shortly, I will see you."
