India today is a vibrant free-market democracy, a nation well on its way to overcoming decades of widespread poverty. The nation’s rise is one of the great international stories of the late twentieth century, and in India Unbound the acclaimed columnist Gurcharan Das offers a sweeping economic history of India from independence to the new millennium. Das shows how India’s policies after 1947 condemned the nation to a hobbled economy until 1991, when the government instituted sweeping reforms that paved the way for extraordinary growth. Das traces these developments and tells the stories of the major players from Nehru through today. As the former CEO of Proctor & Gamble India, Das offers a unique insider’s perspective and he deftly interweaves memoir with history, creating a book that is at once vigorously analytical and vividly written. Impassioned, erudite, and eminently readable, India Unbound is a must for anyone interested in the global economy and its future.

Thought provoking book By Rajesh Kumar, 17/07/2008 14:09:15
It is wonderful book - great mixture of memoir, economic analysis, social investigation and political scrutiny. Gurcharan Das has elaborately described the social and economic changes that India has gone through since it got its freedom. He has analyzed why India was rich then and why it is poor now. He also analyzed failure of India to enter the Industrial revolution. Our success in software and internet is the evidence. He recites the stories of India’s entrepreneurs; he also weaves his personal story. His family moves to America, his education in Harvard, his years in India as marketing executive. His decision to retire at the peak of his career and return to India so as to make a difference in Indian economy. He is very hopeful for India’s progress and comapares it to the slow and wise elephant. India preserves its way of life and its civilization of diversity, tolerance and spirituality against the global culture. He is understandably enthusiastic about India's current economic reforms, but his key argument -- that India can quickly become the world leader in the information revolution.
This book gives you the glimpses of the post 91 era but after that this book takes head on the purpose which it desires to fulfill. Worthy of all the accolades which it has got and quite brilliantly summarized by Amartya Sen that it gives us a managerial, social, economic insight of my country India.
