Aesop's Fables Book Description

The story goes that a sow who had delivered a whole litter of piglets loudly accosted a lioness. "How many children do you breed?" asked the sow. "I breed only one", said the lioness, "but it is very well bred!"

The fables of Aesop have become one of the most enduring traditions of European culture, ever since they were first written down nearly two millennia ago. Aesop was reputedly a tongue-tied slave who miraculously received the power of speech; from his legendary storytelling came the collections of prose and verse fables scattered throughout Greek and Roman literature. First published in English by Caxton in 1484, the fables and their morals continue to charm modern readers

readers interested in folklore and myth; students of classical mythology, folklore, ancient history, sociology and anthropology in the ancient world, East/West civilization and culture courses

`
Laura Gibbs has recently brought out a splendid translation with a very helpful introduction of the bulk of the fables in the Oxford World s Classics.

Gabriel Josipovici, TLS

1 customers found the following review helpful An evergreen book full of wisdom

If you are looking for a wonderful book of fables for your children, or even looking for a book that would make your child wise and prudent, then you must not skip Aesop's Fables. Aesop's fables are just right for your children because they contain the wisdom that has been collected since time immemorial. For those who would like to know more, Aesop was a Greek slave, whose wisdom is reflected in the fables that are popular till now. Not much is know about the time in which he lived, but many of the stories called Aesop's fables are attributed to other sources as well. He was born most probably in 620 BC and he was a slave by birth. Almost all his stories end with a moral, telling us the difference between right and wrong and the lessons learnt from the short incidents that are mentioned in the fables. During one of his missions as an ambassador to one of the Greek Republics called Delphi, he was killed in a manner not befitting his status as an ambassador. However his stories still uphold the principles of truth and they are certainly a great read for younger children and a wonderful addition to your existing treasure of books in your personal or domestic library.
