Excerpt: ... SEEING THE WRECK OF THE COMET STEAM Boat, LYING Upon Gourock BEACH, 23d July, 1828. Behold that wreck; late scene of woe In tatter'(1 fragments lye, Devastation she displays, Which fills the moisten'd eye. The recent grief, was hush'd to rest, Again renews it's vigour, The throbbing heart, and falling tear, Point to that broken figure, And bring to mind, a Parent's fate, Or Child's untimely doom, With all the horrors of that scene, In melancholy gloom. Who now can look upon that wreck, Without emotion here, Who can behold the broken hull, And not then shed a tear. There stood perhaps, in beauty's bloom, The fairest of our race, And there did honour brightly shine, Pure virtue on her face. And there a tender Mother stood, Encircling in her arms, Her babe in innocence array'd, Enrob'd in nature's charms. It's lovely face, in danger smil'd, And oaught it's mother's sigh, And wonder'd at the falling tear, And Parent's plaintive cry. Perhaps upon that platform stood, The wedded pair in love, Enwrapt into each other's arms, Imploring help above. And there the faithful Dog did stand, His Master sought in vain, Then plunged into the yawning gulph, And from the wat'ry main, Did save a Female; who now lives, Once thought no help was near, Canine affection she declares, She ever will revere. There Strangers too, did Strangers meet, And sunk amidst the wave, No hand was ready them to help, No refuge them to save. These scenes of horror on our Shore, The living may conceive, But who can paint them, as they were, When Fate did Hope bereave, ON RECEIVING A LETTER TO THE FUNERAL OF A YOUNG RELATION.
