Madame Bovary is the greatest novel written by Gustave Flaubert. The book is translated by . has done a great job in translating the novel without losing ita charm and grace. I am sure the book is as good as its original version. It’s a woman’s desperate quest for freedom and romance but she goes in the wrong direction and her dreams turns into nightmares. Charles Bovary is a doctor in a small village. He marries a young and beautiful woman Emma. Emma is completely fascinated by the romantic novels. She finds the same romance and love in her husband as she read in books. She does not take care of her husband and her responsibilities. However, Charles loves her the most and tries to keep her happy by all means. Emma is feels her marriage is frustrating and hellish. She makes lovers and they seduce Emma with the illusions of romance. Her affairs are just the fleeting moments of satisfaction. She eventually incurs debts and poisons herself on the day bailiffs raid her house, unable to take the shame. Emma cheats on her husband, spends all his money and drive her child to an orphanage. This is the clear story. It gives no moral but a human story. Flaubert' skewed the vulgarities and pettiness of the middle-class in French period. Flaubert is not afraid to describe female sexual longings and sex scenes are descriptive. I understood why this was a controversial novel. It seems that Flaubert understands the woman mind. He has so thoroughly explains the feeling that arouse in Emma’s mind and heart. he writing is very fine, and will continue to attract those who love the French language. This is a rare novel of its time as its main character Emma is selfish and not noble. Everyone who reads it will surely enjoy it.
