Johann Michael Heinrich Dring (1789-1862) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller, Theologe und Mineraloge. Nach einer abgebrochenen Kaufmannslehre studierte Dring ab 1814 in Jena Theologie und Philosophie und wurde unter dem Einfluss Goethes und anderer bald schriftstellerisch ttig. Er wurde Mitglied der Gesellschaft fr die gesamte Mineralogie in Jena. Nach der Redaktionsttigkeit fr das Weimarer Oppositionsblatt 1817 arbeitete er vor allem als bersetzer, Literaturhistoriker und Biograf deutscher Schriftsteller. Bekannt geworden ist er vor allem als Biograf der deutschen Klassiker, insbesondere als erster Biograf Goethes. Zu seinen Werken zhlen auch: Friedrich Schillers Leben (1822), Johann Gottfried von Herders Leben (1823), Klopstocks Leben (1825), Goethes Leben (1828), Christian Frchtegott Gellert[s Leben (1833), Goethes Briefe in den Jahren 1768 bis 1832 (1837) und Christoph Martin Wieland: Ein biographisches Denkmal (1840).
