  lovely book

  I read this book few years back and reread it again when my twelve years daughter took it out from the shelf to read it in her summer vacations. After she finished, I picked up the book and started reading again. I found the novel as interesting and charming as years back. ‘Daddy-long-legs’ is a story of a young girl, Jerusha Abbott and her letters to her benefactor. Jerusha is eighteen years smart, innocent girl and unfamiliar to the outside world. She has spent her life in orphanage. Her benefactor sends her to college for higher education. In return of her education, she has to write a letter to him every month. Jerusha is excited for this. The two has neither seen nor talked to each other. They are strangers. She knows only three things about him that is he is rich, tall and hates girls. So, she calls that man Daddy Long Legs just because of the image she has in her mind. She changes her name to Judy. She gets the new atmosphere, makes new friends, studies and college life. Everything is changed in her life. She regularly writes letter to Daddy Long Legs but her never reply. She shares a love-hate-anger-gratitude relationship with him.She illustrates her letters with child-like drawings. She meets a young man and the two fall in love with each other. Judy is afraid if the guy would come to know about her background, he would leave her. She deeply wishes if Daddy Long Legs could help her out. In the end, the identity of Daddy Long Legs is revealed and Judy gets her love life. This is really a loving story of Judy who is very honest to the commitment and writes with feelings even after her letters are not replied. I love her character the most. The author Jean Webster clearly wrote with simple words and straight forward. The simplicity of the novel attracts the readers to read it again and again. An enjoyable read for all age-groups.
