Thigpen was born and raised in Nashville, TN, where he earned a B.A. in Bible from Free Will Baptist Bible College. He held the Master of Religious Education degree from Temple Baptist Seminary in Chattanooga, TN. He earned his Ph.D. at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, IL. Rev. Thigpen was a Free Will Baptist ordained minister. He ministered in a variety of positions: youth worker, pastor, denominational publishing executive, college professor, curriculum writer and editor.
