Excerpt: ... CHAPTER X IN SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION. The writer is a teacher of biology. For a dozen years he hae been teaching in high schools and normal schools and supervising the work of children. He has run into problems which he desired to solve. He has transferred himself, entirely, for a year into the educational and psychological fields in the hope that he might have a better basis for solving his problems and through them those of teachers of children in the elementary schools, especially in relation to science work. In this thesis he has tried to survey the elementary science field as it is; he has tried to evaluate it from the standpoint of modern educational thought and investigation, and not from the standpoint of a teacher of high school or college science. So far as he knows no such survey of the elementary science or nature study problem has before been made, -if it had this survey would not be worthy of a thesis. There have been various brief surveys of various kinds made, but not such as we have tried to make. We may summarize our findings, briefly, as follows: 1. The history of American education shows the elementary science movement developing both as a result of a growing conception of the possibilities of the school and as a reaction to the drylng-up effcot of tool subjects alone. S. We also found that, no matter with what fine ambitions a of "freedom" or "naturalness"/hew movement were started, there always appeared the tendency to organize and formalize. 3.
