This is a fast paced race across the globe as Che and Dial (a mother figure known to him) hide from the police and in the process, create an existence for themselves. Che Selkirk's parents belong to the increasingly violent 'Students for a Democratic Society' and both have disappeared leaving him with his extremely rich grandmother. When the young Che is all of eight years old, a woman Che believes to be his mother; kidnaps him and takes him from New York to a remote town in Australia.
The novel takes you through his journey; where he learns to embrace hunger, poverty, love and loss. It is a coming of age tale where the young boy tries to understand who he is and where his future is headed. As I found this to be a gripping read I could relate to both the characters Che and Dial. The author has treated them equally giving each of them equal prominence and joint narration. The two main forces moving the narrative along are true love and visual artifice and the search for truth is not as apparent as one would expect it to be. A truly gripping read and I strongly recommend the book.
