Unruly Times is a satire on the Indian novel in English. Its main pre-occupation is the exploitation of identity politics by post-colonial writers. The main character, Dushyant, is an advertising copywriter in New York, who wants to publish a novel. He is told by people in the industry that he won't be marketable unless he writes a novel about something Indian, There is a double narrative running through the novel - Dushyant's struggle to write as well as the plot of the novel itself.

I'm sure that most of us will have gone through the urge of writing a book, now that many of us are educated in English and have a literary streak running through us. However, many of us might come in for rude shock when we try to put the book in the international market, given the number of writers vying for the top spot. Even more, writing as an Indian may have its own complex experiences.
This is exactly what Prashant Bhavalkar has to narrate in his book Unruly Times. With a background in Journalism it seems that Bhavalkar has seen 'it' from the inside. The protagonist in this book is Dushyant who wants to write a novel and wants to be marketable. Though he is an advertising copywriter in New York, his publishers don't consider him to be marketable if he does not bring up anything 'Indian'.
Rightly said, it is a brilliant account on how things have gone about with Indian writing in English. Read it to find out how the Indian novel in English is accepted internationally, since many Indian writers seem to have wryly taken to writing novels in English for the international market especially after independence and claiming success. You will enjoy reading about Dushyant's efforts along with the depth of the plot alongside.
