About the Book:
The book entitled "Education and Development" contains 16 papers and is the outcome of a national level seminar on "Higher Education and Development" organised under my leadership at Kalimpong Degree College in May 1998 with a financial help received from the Ford Foundations, New Delhi. The seminar was the first of its kind ever held in the history of Darjeeling and the proceedings appearing in this book seek to correlate higher education with the process of development and stresses the need to bring about significant changes in the conventional curriculum structure as is being followed presently in our colleges and universities. It is desired that the curriculum should be so designed as to provide the student community with highly specialised knowledge, skill, ideas and a perception for the future as well as a clear and a critical understanding of social, economic, cultural, moral, spiritual and development issues. Education and economic development being complemental to each other, our college and university education should primarily focus on the life supporting systems that these resources harbour, sericulture, forestry, animal husbandry and industries based on local raw materials. As about 80% of the total population of the country including the Darjeeling-Sikkim Himalaya are farmers which depend on the above occupational areas for their living and economy, it follows, therefore, that our higher education system should be especially geared to solving the needs and problems of the farming community. When investment in education fails to bring the expected return, it is time for retrospecting the underlying causes before long. Our idea of sustainable development obviously must reconcile education and economic development in terms of our own deficiencies and potentialities.

About the Author(s):
Prof.Dr. G.S. Yonzone, son of late R.B. Yonzone and Late Chandtamaya Yonzone, Professor Yonzone was born on 17th day of November 1939 at Sinji Busty of Kalimpong, District Darjeeling. Presently Chairman of the West Bengal Regional School Service Commission, Hill Zone, and formerly Head of the Undergraduate and postgraduate Department of Botany, Darjeeling Kalimpong College, Prof. Yonzone did this M.Sc. in Botany from the University of North Bengal in 1964 and Ph.D. in plant Taxonomy from the University of Calcutta in 1976. He is the founder- General Secretary of the Himalaya Science Association, Darjeeling, and Founder-Managing Trustee of Darjeeling Goodwill Animal Shelter at Bong Busty, Kalimpong. He has organised numerous seminars and workshops in the field of science and environment education as a part of his effort to bring about mass awareness on the inseparable linkage between Education and Development. Professor Yonzone was selected by the British Council, London, as a Visitor Scientist to United Kingdom in 1983 and during the two months period he visited the British Natural History Museum, Kew Botanic Gardens, the Edinburgh Royal Botanic Gardens and finally the University of Reading where he worked with Professor V.H. Heywood in the area of plant Taxonomy and Ecology. In 1993, Prof. Yonzone became the first hillman of Darjeeling to have been selected as Fullbright United States Educational Foundation in India.
