The division into acts and scenes is traditional, neither being given before the Players' Quarto of 1676, and in that only the acts. The earlier Quartos have no division, and in the Ff. it extends only as far as Act ii, scene 2. Mr. Rose (New Shakspere Society Transactions, 1877-1879) has argued that the accepted division is incorrect; but it would not be convenient to adopt any other here. Mr. Rose's paper will, however, repay careful study. He would retain the present endings of Act i and Act iv. Act ii he would end with the present Act iii, scene 1, and Act iii with the present Act iv, scene 3.
