|Title:||Makers of Modern India||Publisher:||Belknap Press|
|No. of Pages:||500|
This book is a collection of writings and works by people who according to the author helped shape modern India with their ideas, philosophies, vision. The author explains his choice of people included in an elaborate introduction. Note that "action" people who have contributed to the history/making of the country do NOT feature- unless their ideas have helped to shape the country. So people like Subhas Bose are not included. However, that is not a problem, because the extensive list and adequate coverage provide a wealth of interesting material. However, I would have preferred longer commentaries by the author on each person. Ramchandra Guha chooses to let the actors do all the talking. His commentaries are very short introductions only.
