The Mine by Arnab Ray is a meticulous piece of beautiful literature. I am not exaggerating. This roller-coaster ride of 282 pages was worth every bit. The Mine is a brilliant book in every aspect and I am so glad that Arnab Ray wrote it. This is his second book (after the acclaimed May I Hebb Your Attention Pliss) and by choosing such a subject for his second book, a psychological horror thriller, he completely deviates from his forte and effortlessly. The Mine stands out because it does away with the regular choice of subjects as seen in Indian Writing in English which is now chronic as every author just wants to recycle what his predecessors have done. The Mine, mind it, is deliciously cruel and massively intelligent. Each and every page reveals how Arnab Ray constructed the story, taking care of each and every minute detail to the point. A conspicuous presence of savagery so dignified, so mellow yet so overwhelming can be seen throughout the book.
The cover and the description made me pick this book, thinking it is a horror story.. It was less a horror but a thriller, lot of gruesome blood then bizarre scenes.. Perfect for a bollywood movie.. Since this is my first scary novel, I liked it, but it is not even close to what I have expected.. Considering that this genre is not explored more in Indian fiction writing, it is a pretty decent stuff.. The ending was very predictable and lots of twists in one flow..
