Unlike most Indian immigrants, Amara Malhotra is not destined to achieve the American Dream. Much to the anxiety of her parents the spirited Biji and the doting Baba Amara leads an unremarkable life. That is, until she marries Harvard-educated millionaire, Prashant Roy. However, this fairy-tale isnt meant to last, and even as Amaras marriage collapses, she finds herself returning to the land of her birth, to the small city of Shimla. Here, in a borough grappling with questions of modernity, Amara is caught in a tug-of-war between old beliefs and new ones, between parents who favour obedience and new friends who encourage independent thought. With powerful insights, One and a Half Wife traces the coming-of-age of multiple characters, while re-defining family, relationships and love in contemporary India.

Amara - A One and a Half Wife
By Sudha Subramanian,
A one resembling a girl-next-door, anything that can happen in Amara Malhotra's life is decided only by her mother's wish or God's wish or His wish, 'His' referring to her future husband. A typical Indian household it is, full of dreams and hopes of landing in the U.S. The dream is achieved as the family realizes its American dream but what awaits them in the foreign country is unexpected. A failed marriage turns Amara a One and a Half Wife and eventually her character, too. A nice read that will take you to the United States with the Malhotra family!
A great first attempt

Meghna Pant's One and Half Wife is a compelling read among the recent books by Indian Authors in English. The story flows smoothly from one plot to another making it a must read for all. The author’s characterization and description are so real that one seems to develop a instant bond. Amara's feelings and helplessness in described in a fashion that one feels that she will come to life anytime. The subtle details and twists in the story making it an interesting read till the end.
In spite of being a little simplistic, it is a fabulous first attempt and is recommended.
One and A Half Wife - A Must Read
By Haimanti Chakraborty,
Knowing your own desires is important for you to succeed and live a harmonious life. Debutant Meghna Pant’s One and A Half Life is a story which will inspire you to work on your own desires rather than always following anyone else’s desire. The story has a perfect blend of humor and darkness along with a keen sense of observation. You will be able to feel the joys and the sorrows which the various characters experience during the course of their lives.
The story captures a span of 20 years and along with it a large number of social issues. It starts with chasing the American Dream and ends with achieving the great Indian Dream. An issue like divorce which was considered a taboo by Indian families as well as the Indian society, be it in India or in the USA, has been skilfully dealt with extreme compassion.
The story also depicts subtly how the Indian community in the USA tend to cling on to their traditional beliefs whereas in India modernity is emerging.
Your journey with the protagonist, Amara Malhotra will be an experience wherein you will at different times find yourself fragile, confused, heart-broken, but at the end you will stand tall to face the world.
A lovely and engrossing read. Amara, the main protagonist is someone with whom everyone will identify with. Lovely story and an engrossing read.
It is priced 20Rs. lesser here and is an awesome deal and worth every penny you spend :)

One and a Half Wife is a brilliant book by an Indian author in a long time. The maturity with which Meghna Pant treats the subject of immigration, divorce and reverse-immigration among the 'one and a half generation' Indian-Americans is commendable. The characters are tightly chalked out and leave a long lasting impression on the reader, even after the book is done. It is easy to connect with the characters and you feel like you are actually a part of the life of the people in the book.
This is one of the rare stories that make it to print but something that we might have heard from a friend or a distant relative. I would strongly recommend it for readers of all age groups. Meghna Pant, takes you through a learning experience through the life of her protagonist, Amara Malhotra and I must advice you to take this trip with her.
