About the Book :
Pigeon English by Stephen Kelman is cloaked in urban severity. It deals with serious issues like troubles faced by immigrants, gang warfare and murder. It’s a tale of gang-warfare with menacing murder of Damilola Taylor. Harrison Opoku, the central character and the narrator of the book is 11-year-old, Ghanaian immigrant struggling with bristling menace surrounding his life.
Pigeon English opens with Harry moving to Dell farm estate with his mom and his elder sister, Lydia. It’s not just the shock of the immigration that Harri is faced with; there are a lot of disturbing facts that he has to come to terms with. There is the murder of 10 years old Damilola Taylor, who is stabbed and murdered outside a fried chicken shop.
Harri with the help of his friend Dean takes up the role of the detective and tries to solve the murder mystery in CSI style. Harri throughout the book emerges as an adorable character. He struggles to be a part of the crowd, adores Poppy Morgan, the lovely blonde in his art class. While he is drawn into the threatening world of menace, he still believes everything that fall to his ears. He adopts a pigeon and cares for him.
Book forays into the dark world of gang-warfare, petty criminals, alcoholics and a harsh reality.
