The Rainmaker Book Description

Rudy Baylor is a newly-qualified lawyer: he has one case, and one case alone, to save himself from his mounting debts. His case is against a giant insurance company which could have saved a young man's life, but instead refused to pay the claim until it was too late. The settlement could be worth millions of dollars, but there is one problem: Rudy has never argued a case in court before, and he's up against the most expensive lawyers that money can buy.

The Rainmaker is a classic story of greed, crime, death, corruption, love, the law and morals. The story reveals how a profession can touch so many aspects of life. The central character, Rudy Baylor, a new graduate of Memphis State Law School. Memphis State is not a top law school and Rudy is a good, but not great student. Rudy finds that his law degree offers few employment opportunities. The job market for lawyers is bleak. He associates with mob lawyer and an ambulance chaser. While visiting a senior citizen's center, Rudy meets Dot Black, whose son, Donny Ray, has terminal leukemia. The Blacks have a medical insurance policy which should have covered a bone marrow transplant from Donny Ray's twin brother. This would have saved Donny's life, but the insurance company refuses to cover the surgery costs. . Now it is too late and the cancer has reached a terminal stage. There is no question that this is a case of bad faith on the part of the insurance company. Rudy takes the case and sues, going up against a high priced law firm. Rudy also finds a dark aspect and her past family life. There are many other plots that go along with the story. If you read this book you can understand how elaborate the story lines are. Overall, John Grisham’s novel is excellent. We may dislike lawyers, but we dislike insurance companies even more. The reader quickly feels that Rudy is a real person, with strengths and weaknesses. The other characters are also well drawn and Grisham avoids stereotyping them. Grisham’s knowledge on law and judicial syatems make his novels different from the other law books. The interesting portions of the novel like dirty trick by the insurance company, lawyers tricks. The novel is fun sometime. But yet the quest for justice remains in the heart. I complement the character of Rudy Baylor. I recommend this book for anyone interested in a lawyer book or a book where justice always prevails.
