About the Book :
When Sir Charles Baskerville dies in mysterious circumstances, his nephew and heir Sir Henry returns from South Africa. In the meanwhile, Dr. Mortimer, the local doctor, is concerned about Sir Henry's safety, so he consults Sherlock Holmes and recounts the tale of one Sir Hugo Baskerville who, several generations previously, had been killed by a huge hound and which now is believed to be a curse on the family. When Holmes agrees to take on the case it almost immediately becomes apparent that Sir Henry's life is indeed in danger.
About the Author :
Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was most noted for his stories about the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. A Study in Scarlet was the first of 60 stories that featured Sherlock Holmes. Sir Arthur also created equally brilliant characters alongside that of Holmes: his friend Dr. Watson the good-natured if bumbling narrator of the stories, and the master criminal Professor Moriarty. Conan Doyle was so successful in his literary career that in about five years from when he started writing, he abandoned his medical practice and started devoting his entire time to writing. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was versatile in his writing, and wrote numerous other books which brought equal fame. Historical romances like Micah Clarke (1888), The White Company (1890), Rodney Stone (1896), and Sir Nigel(1906) brought him many accolades. In 1891 Conan Doyle was contemplating slaying Holmes as the character was taking his mind off better things. In 1893 in order to dedicate more time to more important works, Conan Doyle had Holmes and Professor Moriarty apparently plunge to their deaths together down the Reichenbach Falls in the story "The Final Problem". Public outcry, however, led him to bring the character back in 1901, in The Hound of the Baskervilles. Conan Doyle served in the Boer War as a physician, and on his return to England wrote The Great Boer War (1900) and The War in South Africa: Its Causes and Conduct (1902), justifying England's participation. For these works he was knighted in 1902.
