Saurav Sethi, teenage prodigy and future tennis star in the making, watches his elder brother Raj fight a losing battle in life. But father Akshay Sethi turns a blind eye, letting his elder son spiral into the depths of depression. Saurav challenges destiny and prepares to give Raj a life he deserves, but will his life-changing decision see Rajs seemingly impossible dream of running the marathon in the 1980 Olympics come to life? Intense and Gripping!

The story is different and the characters fresh vulnerable and yet strong and determined. The plot moves around an Indian family in an international setting wherein the family has two kids- A kid who is deaf , fearful, silent and low on confidence and academics and the other who is exceptional in both academics as well as sports. It is about how the normal kid goes on to realise his dream to play tennis and gradually realises that the deaf brother has a dream to run in the Olympics marathon. He sacrifices his own dreams to fulfill that of his brother. An intense and moving read

Wings of Silence: What a fitting title!

The book revolves around two brothers, one of whom is born deaf. Saurabh, the bright shining star of his parent's life, grows and flourishes in every walk of life thanks to the affection he receives. Raj, on the other hand is a bitter disappointment for his army retired father, Akshay Sethi, who manages to escape from the Pakistani Military camp. He is awarded the Veer Chakra, but bitterness doesn't leave him and he moves to America for a more lucrative future. Saurabh adjusts with this new life without much problems, but for Raj it is a different story. Akshay refuses to send him to a special school for deaf children, as a result of which Raj faces constant harassment at school and at home, from a father who wants to have nothing to do with him. Saurabh too is guilty of ignoring his elder brother, always more interested in Tennis. He goes far and is on the verge of making a great career for himself when his eyes open and he sees the dreams and hopes Raj writes about in his personal diary. He gives up a bright future as a tennis star to help fulfill Raj's dreams of winning the Olympics Marathon. Whether he is successful or not is for one to read and find out. The book is definitely an inspiring read, but what really disappointed me was that it was way too fast paced. It feels like the author did not take enough time to explore the emotional turmoils of the characters in the book. Also, the entire journey to becoming a participant in the Olympics has been portrayed as though it involves no unsurpassed hurdle, which in fact is far from the real story, even back in the 1970s. For me, the characters didn't grow up at the pace of the story, Saurabh and Raj remained teenagers till the end and that is where this could have been a much better book. It's a no-frills read, one that will surely be enjoyed by those very interested in sports. A definite page turner, a good weekend read. Pretty filmy in parts, so you can forego a movie outing one weekend and enjoy this book.
