Best Of Gulzar (Angoor, Koshish, Khubsoorat, Mere Apne, Maachis) Movie Description

Angoor : Based on Shakespeare's 'A comedy of errors', this is a story of identical twins (2 pairs) and mistaken identities.
Koshish :Haricharan Mathur delivers newspapers on his bicycle and lives a poor lifestyle in Bombay, India, just like millions of other Bombayites. But for Haricharan there is a difference - he is both deaf and dumb. One day he comically collides with equally deaf-mute, Aarti, and both fall in love and get married. Soon they give birth to a son, who is normal, much to the relief of his parents. One rainy night, their house gets burglarized by Aarti's brother, Kanu, who leaves the door open, and also steals Hari's bike. The child ventures out in the rain, and subsequently dies, leaving both Aarti and Hari devastated. Their lives get turned upside down, as Hari is unable to deliver newspapers anymore, and must find other means of employment to survive. He does so by polishing shoes. In this manner they survive, and give birth to yet another son, and name him Amit. Hari and Aarti are thrilled that Amit is able to hear and speak, and would like him to study and find a better job. Will Aarti and Hari's dreams be fulfilled? How will Amit turn out?
Khubsoorat : Nirmala Gupta runs her household and family in a very strick and authoritarian manner. While most of her family resent this, they do obey her and carry out her instructions, so as to be on her good side. Things start to change after her second son gets married to Anju. Manju, Anju's sister, comes over to stay for a few days with the Gupta family, and is accepted by everyone except Nirmala. Nirmala's third son intends to marry Manju. But Manju does not like the manner in which his mom bosses everyone along, and feels some changes are needed in the Gupta household.
Mere Apne :Anandi, a widow for several years, lives all by herself in a small village. One day out of the blue comes Arun Gupta, claiming to be her relative, and literally begs her to come to live with him and his family in the city, which she does. Once in the city, she finds out that things are not the same as in the village. She finds out that Arun has actually brought her to the city, not out of pity, love or compassion, but for doing household duties, and baby sitting, without any ages. She moves out and lives in a broken-down structure hoping and waiting that someday, someone will actually come for her, and claim her as family.
Maachis : A realistic, hard-hitting portrayal of terrorism and youth in the Punjab after the 1984 riots.
