CHANDNI BARHeading to Bombay with her lone surviving relative after she loses her parents and her town is destroyed by religious strife young Mumtaz (Tabu) has a difficult time adjusting to a place where jobs seems scare and life is cheap. Informed by distant relative Iqbal (Rajpal Yadav) that the only job available at the time is a position in the sordid Chandni Bar Mumtaz's guardian Mamu Irfan reluctantly accepts the position in order to provide for her young charge. Soon addicted to drugs Mamu Irfan finds solace only in the company of her equally despondent co workers. The arrival of corrupt political henchman Potiya (Atul Kulkarni) provides a glimmer of hope as he falls for Mamu Irfan through after a brief marriage and a pair of children later Potiya quickly disappears never to be seen again. Despite Mamu Irfan's best efforts to keep Mumtaz and her children shielded from the bleak realities of her own life fate soon descends a series of crippling blows on the hapless family. UTSAV Utsav is based on a classical tale of love and romance and political drama "Mrichchakatika " by poet Bhasa. It is a story of a passionate love between Vasantasena (played by Rekha) a beautiful and renowned courtesan of Ujjain and Charudutt (played by Shekhar Suman) a poor married Brahmin. Interesting drama unfolds resulting in confusion and calamities. The brother in law of the king Samsthanak (played by Shahsi Kapoor) is in pursuit of Vasantasena. On one hand Aryak (played by Kunal Kapoor) a political revolutionary plots to depose the king on the other hand Vatsyayana (played by Amjad Khan) complies his masterpiece on erotics the Kamasutra. The plots thicken and come to a climax when Chardutt is accused of murder and sentenced to die. MANDI Purantapalli, a small town, which had seen better days when the feudal landlords used the town as a watering place, the bordello int he center of the town being one of the main attractions or the only attraction for them. While the madam of the 'establishment' on preserving the image of her house as a high class one, the girls seem bent on proving it otherwise. With feudalism giving way to the arrival of the rather hypocritical middle class, the bordello becomes the target. A smooth real estate developer, some self appinted, keepers of the morals and sundry others succeed in outsting the girls from their home, but with unintentional results. Wherever the bordello goes fame follows, forcing the smooth operating real estate developer to come to terms with the madame of the house. A captivating, film from Shyam Bengal, with some touching and sometimes funny moments. MAUSAM Amarnath Gill, owner of medicine factories come to Darjeeling for his vacation after a lapse of twenty years. When he was a medical student, he had fallen in love with a girl here, whom he could not marry. While on his walking rounds the next day, Gill enquires at a small tea shop if he knew Thapa 'Vaid'. after slight pause, the oldman tells the tale. "Yes, Sir the Vaid has expired, but his daughter who loved a stranger was forcibly married to a boy from Nilighati. Because the stranger did not keep his promise". Gill was the stranger who broke the promise. He goes to Nilighati to find Chanda, but he is told that her husband is dead and that, now she left this place also, with her daughter. He goes to the Pili Kothi in search of Chanda. There the Mail tells him that she had become mad and in her madness she would catch young school going boys ask them to become a doctor, and marry her daughter. Later Pagli Chanda dies. On hearing this sad story Gill weeps bitterly. Gill has lost all the charm of life. He meets a woman at a medical store while purchasing medicine for a headache. The woman is abusing a gentleman, while Gill looks astonished at her and speaks out unknowingly "Chanda". On enquiring, he is told that she is a prostitute. In his room, all the while he is thinking about a woman. In the night he goes to the Kotha and meets Kajli. He addresses her as "daughter" but she does not like his behavior, and sends him away with abuses. Not losing hope Gill comes to Kajli as a customer and takes her to his house, Gill tries to change her in every manner but she regards him as a customer while he sees her as a daughter. Gill wants to tell her about himself but she hates the doctor either her mother had fallen in love and that is why he is silent. Was Amarnath her customer ? Or did she become his daughter ? Or did she go back to the KOTHA ? Could Amarnath give her a new life ? The answer to all these questions is : "MAUSAM"
