This is the district town of Tejpur, with an ensemble of colourful characters, Sadhu Yadav, the kingpin, his debauched son Sundar, the corrupt, beedi smoking Bhurelel, the police chief and the self-righteous journalist Rabidas. It is here that Amit Kumar (Ajav Devgun) is transferred as the new Superintendent of Police. Apalled at what he sees, Amit tries to breathe some life into the demoralized police force. Some officers accept his honesty and respond. Only one, Bachcha Yadav, makes the choice to transform his life. But the system is too entrenched. Blocked at every turn, inspiration gives way to frustration and a weapon of revenge is accidentally discovered. The cleansing of the wrongdoer with Gangaajal (a metaphorical reference to mythical powers of the waters of the river Ganges), the cleansing that absolves all sins and makes one pure.
