A tribute to the Legend: T.S. Palghat Mani Iyer
South Indian classical music has one of the most sophisticated melodic and rhythmic structures in the world. The melodic system of ragas is organized into a table of 72 parent scales (called Melakarta ragas) from which millions of derived scales (called Janya ragas) can be formed. The rhythmic system of talas is organized into two groups Suladi talas (with 35 talas) and Deshadi talas (with 108 talas); apart from these two sets of talas there are others, and new ones can be created too.
Dr. L. Subramaniam starts this album with a compositional form called the varnam, which he performs in 15 speeds by dividing the beat into different number of pulses. The varnam "Ninnu kori" composed by Ramnad 'Poochi' Srinivasa Iyengar is in the raga Mohana and is set to an 8 beat cycle (divided as 4+2+2) called Adi tala. Mohana is a pentatonic scale and is a janya raga of the 28th melakarta raga Harikhamboji. Moahan has five notes in the ascent and the descent: S R2 G3 P D2 (tonic, major second, major third, perfect fifth and major sixth). This track is unique because never before has a varnam been recorded or performed in 15 speeds in the history of South Indian classical music.
The second composition has Dr. Subramaniam performing a Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi in Raga Hemavati, set to the three beat cycle of Rupaka Tala. Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi is one of the most complicated musical forms in Carnatic music since it greatly depends on improvisation on the spot and a great control over melody and rhythm. The "ragam" section is a free-style melodic improvisation of the raga and is called raga alapana. The "tanam" section is a melodic improvisation which has a rhythmic structure associated with it. It is an extension of the raga alapana but often using doubling and tripling of the notes. The "pallavi" section is based on a fixed composition of one or two lines and is improvised upon.
