Formerly known as TELCO (Tata Engineering Locomotive Company), Tata Motors is India's largest private sector enterprise. It was founded by Indian entrepreneur Jamshedji Tata, now headed by his younger son Ratan Tata.
It is part of the conglomerate Tata group, which is into diverse business interests like power, steel, chemicals, tea and telecommunication. Overall, the Tata family comprises of 97 business companies across seven business sectors - Engineering, Materials, Energy, Chemicals, Services, Consumer products, Information systems, and Communications
TELCO commenced production in 1945, with its head quarters in Jamshedpur, West Bengal. It initially concentrated on manufacturing locomotives and trains. TELCO was renamed to TATA motors in 1983, and it first entered the passenger car segment in 1999 under the guidance and leadership of Ratan Tata
Tata Motors has virtually brought India on the automotive map of the world by designing and manufacturing its own indigenous series of vehicles and passenger cars.
It currently manufactures a series of vehicles for a wide end segment including passenger cars and utility vehicles, concept vehicles, commercial vehicles and military vehicles. Telco Construction Equipment, a Tata subsidiary in joint collaboration with Hitachi manufactures excavators and other construction equipment.
Tata currently manufactures seven models of passenger cars including a range of variants namely Tata Sierra, Tata Estate, Tata Sumo/Spacio, Tata Safari, Tata Indica, Tata, Indigo, and Tata Indigo Marina.
