The union territories of Daman &Diu are excellent tourist destinations. Daman was earlier known as Damao and is situated on the west coast. The clean and picturesque beaches are a welcome change for any one longing for a pristine weekend getaway. Daman and Diu are known as twin islands and are better known for their beaches and tranquil splendor. Being one of the lesser discovered islands add to its significance.

Both the islands have seen Portuguese influence which is evident in their architecture. The islands came under Indian rule in 1961.Daman is divided into the Northern and the Southern parts. The northern part is smaller and is known as Nani Daman. The southern part is known as Moti Daman. It offers some wonderful sites to the traveler. There is a fishing jetty where you can see anchored boats. The Gandhi park, Nani Daman Fort and the church inside are a must see.

The Nani Daman Fort

The Nani Daman Fort spreads over an area of 12,250 sq. meters. Though it is a small fort it features three spectacular bastions and 2 gateways. You will also come across a church inside the fort known as ‘Our Lady of the Sea’ which is considered to be the principal building in the fort. It is located on the north side of Damanganga river.

Fort of Nani Daman is also known as the fort of St. Jerome. It is an important monument and attracts tourist who like time honored architecture. There is a grand gateway facing the river with an impressive statue of St. Jerome and 2 magnanimous human figures .St. Jerome was one of the most renowned priests. As you explore the fort you will find that the most attractive and beguiling part of this fort is the enormous gateway which faces the river .There is an excellent altar with fine paneling that adds to the beauty. The fortifications provide a good view of the fish market and small fishing fleet alongside. Interestingly there is a Jain temple to the north which has the 18th century murals, portraying the life of Mahavira. Mahavira, the founder of Jainism lived a life of complete honesty, truthfulness and absolute chastity.

The Moti Daman Fort

It is spread around an area of about 30,000 square meters. There are ten bastions and two imposing gateways. The church is polygonal in structure with projections at regular intervals of about 500 feet. There are loop holes along the edge of the roof. The terrace and inner ground surface are connected. It appears as a safety valve during enemy attacks. Within the fort premises the secretariat and other official buildings are located. There are two churches namely the Se Cathedral and Our Lady of the Rosary. The Se Cathedral is a 17th century church with a gilded altar. The Governor’s palace is now used for government offices.

There is a beautiful aquarium within the fort premises and is home to a large variety of exotic species of invertebrates and ornamental fish. Visitors can avail the submarine facility to watch a variety of fish through glass.

Church of our Lady of the Rosary

Church of ‘Our Lady Of The Rosary’ was built in the 17th century. It is located in Moti Daman. The church is famous for the woodwork. The ceiling of the church will astound you with beautiful rose petals that are vibrantly colored. You will see golden cherubs or figurines which enhances the beauty of the church. Illustrations of the stories from the lives of the holy saints are also an attractive feature which is seen on the lateral walls. It has the distinction of being amongst the most reputed works done under the Portuguese influence.

Bom Jesus Church

The Bom Jesus Church is a relic epitomizing the exclusivity of Portuguese architecture. It was constructed in 1603AD. The exquisite art of architects and artisans is evident in the intricate carvings seen here. It is bedecked with lofty ceilings, and intricately carved doorway which adds to the beauty of the Church. Earlier i.e. during the Portugal rule this was a Parish Church.

Jampore Beach

This is a most frequented beach as it is free of danger. You may swim and enjoy a good tan while you are here. There is a plantation of Casuarinas nearby which is not to be missed.

Daman Ganga Tourist Complex

It is an expansive garden infused with a cafeteria that caters to the food requirements of the tourists. There are cottages also which offer a comfortable stay. There are huge waterfalls, island gardens and picturesque fountains. The Satya Sagar Udyan

As the name suggests it is a park which has colorful fountains and walkways that are bordered with shrubs. This is a good place to take a walk and unwind while you are at Daman. The Satya Narayan Mandir is also located in the vicinity.

Kadiaya Lake Garden

This is one of the most stunning man-made gardens. The beautiful lake, fountains, bridges, boats and lush greenery define the picturesque beauty of the place. There is lush greenery all around. You may avail the boating facility by the lake-side. The splendid beauty of the place has attracted film producers to shoot films here.
