That’s what US magazine "Car and Driver" called the BMW 2002. With its short notchback and chiselled shoulder, the BMW 2002 caused a sensation wherever it went.

Today, the new BMW 1 Series Coupe with its fresh, modern design style is already drawing attention befitting its heritage.

And with driving dynamics that set new standards, the new BMW Coupe is a temptation few sports car enthusiasts will be able to resist.

The new BMW 1 Series Coupe has no direct rivals.

It is also the only car in its segment to feature rear-wheel drive, near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution, and intelligent driver aids, resulting in an unrivalled driving experience.

Two models will be offered in Australia at launch (on 20 May 2008). These are the top-of-the-range 135i Sport, which includes standard fitment of the M Sport package, and the 125i.

Already acclaimed for its towering performance in the 3 Series family, the "The International Engine of the Year 2007" is now available for the first time in the 1 Series market, in the guise of the 135i Sport.

This majestically powerful twin turbo 225 kW engine uses latest generation high precision direct petrol injection to generate its power peak, while at the same time returning modest fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The 135i Sport is the first compact car to break the 100 bhp per litre power output level normally reserved for race-bred high-performance cars.

And the new 125i is fitted with a new 3.0-litre capacity straight six VALVETRONIC engine delivering 160 kW of smooth, satisfying power.

The BMW 1 Series Coupe is compact, muscular and poised. It packs a potent punch both visually and dynamically. With its swept-back glass-house, long bonnet, long wheelbase but short overhangs, it has a sporting stance unmatched in the market.

Frameless doors, sculpted wheel arches, and a well defined shoulder line complete with slender B pillars, ensure the BMW 1 Series Coupe makes a dramatic entrance on every occasion.

The four-seater interior has BMW sport seats up front, multi-function sport steering wheel, Boston leather upholstery, and a full array of dynamic safety features.

Complementing the powerful engines are six-pot front brakes for the 135i Sport, while all models come with advanced DSC+ for surefooted traction and control in all conditions.

"The 1 Series Coupe is a landmark car for BMW," says Guenther Seemann, Managing Director of BMW Group Australia.

"It pushes the boundaries of performance, both in outright power and economy, in its market segment.

"These cars will appeal to a wide audience, predominantly comprising younger buyers, building on our existing buyer profile that is the youngest of all premium market brands," he said.
