GM Canada reports Q1 2008 sales results

OSHAWA, ONTARIO - For April 2008, General Motors of Canada dealers delivered 38,984 units, down 13.5% from a year ago and reflects a decrease in overall fleet volume. Fleet car sales were down as a result of a planned reduction in daily rental units and truck fleet volume was impacted by the American Axle labour dispute in the U.S.

"On the retail side of the business cars are up a full 23.8% driven by strong demand for our recently launched products like the Chevrolet Malibu, Saturn Astra and Pontiac Vibe," said Marc Comeau, GM of Canada's vice-president of sales, service, and marketing.

Comeau continued, "With rising gas prices, we are seeing a surge in demand for fuel efficient options and GM is well positioned to meet customer needs with more fuel efficient small cars, a wide selection of affordable hybrids and technologies like Active Fuel Management that enable our large utilities and pick ups to achieve significantly better fuel economy on the highway."

April Sales Highlights:

- Sales for the Chevrolet Malibu, 2008 North America Car of the Year, more than doubled for the fourth consecutive month, up 116%.

- The all-new 2009 Pontiac Vibe launched in April, driving an initial increase of 29.8% for this sporty, fuel efficient car.

- Other fuel efficient small cars like the Chevrolet Aveo and Pontiac Wave had a strong month with overall sales doubling in April.

- Pontiac G5 and Chevrolet Cobalt were up 26.8% and 16.7% respectively.

- Compact small utility sales were up a combined 31.3%, driven by a 59.5% increase for the Chevrolet HHR.

- Cadillac set a sales record with its best April in almost two decades, up 18.1% over last year, driven by a 50.5% increase for the award winning CTS.

- Sales for GMs crossover utility vehicles (Saturn Outlook, Buick Enclave, and GMC Acadia) remained strong driving a 23.5% increase overall in the mid-utility segment.
