GM Canada May 2008 sales down 20%

Oshawa, Ontario - For May 2008, General Motors of Canada dealers delivered 36,277 units, down 20% from a year ago.

“May sales results continue to reflect a rapid accelerated shift in consumer demand for smaller, more fuel efficient small cars and crossovers as a result of rising fuel prices,” said Marc Comeau, GM of Canada’s vice-president of sales, service, and marketing. “GM is well positioned with a range of new GM cars and crossovers, including the award winning Cadillac CTS, more cars that get better than 7L/100 km on the highway, like the Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac Vibe, and eight hybrid models by the end of this year.”

GM announced today that it will add production volume to meet strong consumer demand for fuel efficient cars like the Chevrolet Malibu and Cobalt and the Pontiac G5 and G6.

May Sales Highlights:

  • Retail car sales are up 7.6% calendar-year–to-date, driven by strong performance from the fuel efficient Chevrolet Aveo and Pontiac Wave, with retail sales up 50.3% through May.

  • Chevrolet Malibu continues strong, up 83.3% for the month overall, and 110.7% for the year.

  • Pontiac Vibe made double digit gains, up 11.9% for the month and 25.7% for the year.

  • Cadillac CTS is up a solid 27.9% for the month and 24.5% through May.
