Photography award winners on exclusive witness trip

Chevrolet Europe took the five 2007 photography award winners of Young? Creative? Chevrolet!, a pan-European contest for students of Applied Arts, on a witness trip to the photo shoot of the 2009 commercial catalogue in Madrid, Spain, this week.

On this exclusive trip, the five students from the Swiss EMAF (École de Multimédia et d’Art de Fribourg) school experienced first-hand the different steps of a professional photo shoot: From the initial brief to organizing the final sets – the young winners were given an insight into the process involved in a shoot. The students witnessed a Chevrolet Matiz lifestyle and interior shoot in Mostoles, outside of Madrid, in a very ‘green’ environment; the second photo session brought them back to the Spanish capital the next day, on the parking lot of a shopping mall. They saw the complete work and were briefed on all actions to create the photos of the new catalogue to be distributed in 37 countries next year.

Annick Groberty, one of the five winners said: “This was a very positive experience for us, both from a professional and a social point of view. It was very interesting to be part of a commercial shoot because that is what we study: being at the heart of it is certainly the best way to learn. It was an incredible opportunity that is not accessible to just anyone and that might open opportunities for us in the future.”

The prizes for the Young? Creative? Chevrolet! award winners are designed to offer the students an exciting trip on the one hand and also give them the opportunity to gain a practical experience and meet professionals of their field. Photographer Oliver Paffrath shared his know-how with the five winners, focused both on learning and building a friendly relation to the professional team.

They also had the opportunity to visit PHOTOESPAÑA 2008 the international festival of photography and visual arts taking place in Madrid.

Maria Stenbom, Chevrolet’s Integrated Communications Project Manager said: “We were very happy to be able to give the winners an in-depth insight into our work. We really enjoyed having them and hope it helped them to learn more about the many different aspects of a professional photo shoot.”

The students said:

“It was so interesting to see a real shoot. It is so much different from learning in class!” - Cynthia Darioly

“Such an interesting day! We learned plenty of new things and enjoyed a very nice atmosphere with the team.” - Dorian Giller

“A beautiful experience, we were warmly welcomed on all locations. I learned a lot about the preparation and realization of a photo shoot.” - Amelia Szemoniewski

“I really appreciated being able to actually experience the shoot and have each thing explained to me.” - Aline Fournier

Young! Creative! Chevrolet? is aimed at European art students and conducted yearly by Chevrolet. Creativity is at the heart of the competition which includes 5 disciplines: visual arts, video, interior design, fashion and photography. The 2008 edition of YCC now involves 15 European countries and 75 schools. The European winners will be chosen during a final deliberation at the end of July.

Jury's comment on the project: "'Multifunctional' impresses with the intelligence of the concept and its creativity, in total coherence with Chevrolet's brand values. The picture has a nice 'young' touch, shows people in their daily interaction with a car, and conveys an impression of movement, although the Lacetti is pictured in a still situation."

Amelia Szemoniewski, in her 2nd year of multimedia conception course:
“The contest was presented as a unique opportunity to work with an international brand. Following the competition, I developed a real interest in the brand. The fact that Chevrolet is asking young people to create for them is just so cool!”

Aline Fournier, in her 2nd year of multimedia conception course:
“The briefs are focused on creativity and we are expected to deliver high quality work and of course, we love challenges! I discovered that Chevrolet is not just a car brand but an open-minded company that is interested in young people and creativity!”

Dorian Giller, in his 2nd year of multimedia conception course:
“We really wanted to do something that no one saw before!”
“After the contest, I have the feeling I see plenty more Chevrolets on the streets!”

Annick Groberty, in her 2nd year of multimedia conception course:
“This competition has helped me experience working as a team, which is crucial for a future job! We were all working on a real project with a real firm and I really like the car we worked with. What a great urban car!”

Cynthia Darioly, in her 2nd year of multimedia conception course:
“I learned to listen to other people. From a creative point, it was wonderful to see that what we wanted to express was possible.”
