AMTA reports on strong growth in mobile phone handset shipments

Late in 2007 AMTA reported on strong growth in mobile phone handset shipments with the total for the first 6 months of 2007/08 just over 5.5 million shipments reflecting an increase of 22% over the same period in 06/07.

Figures just in reveal a record 07/08 result with shipments totalling just under 9.87 million.

This result reflects an increase of 17.1% over the result for 06/07.

Notably 2 months in 07/08 exceeded the 1 million mark. The official mobile telecommunications industry shipment figures collected by Informark show there were 1.314 million shipments in November 2007. This is the second highest mark on record, behind October 2007, which recorded 1.493 million handset shipments.

It is important to remember that some of these shipments are in turn shipped to other countries in our region.

The 07/08 result reflects a huge year of activity including network changes and strong growth in the emergence of 3G technology. At the same time the Australian Communication and Media Authority officially reported the Australian market as having reached saturation.

AMTA’s recent Access Economics report not only confirmed recent growth trends but also highlighted projected impacts on productivity and the economy arising from 3G (and beyond) mobile telecommunication technologies. For example:

“Rising mobile data traffic flowing from the increasing uptake of 3G mobile telecommunications will contribute an additional $2.1 billion to Australia’s economic output in 2010, a new Access Economics study finds.

The report Australian Mobile Telecommunications Industry Economic Significance and Contribution 2008 says the mobile telecommunications industry plays a key role in the Australian economy because the enabling technology drives productivity across all sectors, which results in its indirect contribution outweighing its direct impact on the economy.”
