The Medal of Honor, established in 1986, is awarded annually and is SAE’s most prestigious award. The award recognizes SAE members for their unique and significant contributions to SAE International and is funded through the SAE Foundation.
An SAE Fellow, Professor Challen has been a member of SAE for more than 17 years. He is honored for his international involvement and active participation in numerous SAE committees and boards, including the Land and Sea Group, Diesel Engine Committee (including one term as chair), Powerplant Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Awards and Recognition Committee (including one term as chair), Fellows Committee, Engineering Meetings Board, and the Noise and Vibration Conference Committee (including one term as chair).

In addition, Challen has co-authored more than a dozen SAE papers, helped organize many technical sessions and edited the second edition of the Diesel Engine Reference book. He has received three SAE Forest R. McFarland Awards.
