40-year-old lifecycle exercise bike gets high-tech facelift

Introduced 40 years ago as the first computerized stationary bicycle, the Lifecycle Exercise Bike has reinvented itself over the years to become an icon of fitness. Designed by a California scientist trying to get back into shape, the Lifecycle Exercise Bike spawned a boom in cardiovascular fitness in the early 1980s and has been evolving in health clubs and homes ever since.

Life Fitness is now bringing its Lifecycle Exercise Bikes into the 21st Century as part of the Platinum Club Series line of health-club quality cardio equipment for the home. The upright and recumbent bikes have been redesigned from the bottom up with a sleek new look and the latest tools in fitness technology including integrated LCD touch screens, iPod compatibility, and USB connectivity to create, store and track workout information.

“We’ve come a long way since the first ‘electronic coach’ installed on a Lifecycle Exercise Bike,” said John Stransky, president of Life Fitness. “Our team conducted a tremendous amount of research in the field to bring today’s technology to this class exercise machine. It brings the modern health club experience home.”

The Platinum Club Series Lifecycle Exercise Bikes are offered with three unique options – the Engage, Inspire and Achieve Consoles. The Engage Console features a built-in TV with a 15-inch integrated

LCD touch screen, while the Inspire console offers a 7-inch LCD touch screen.

Both include the iPod and USB connectivity features as well as a Virtual Trainer; three vibrant Workout Landscape perspectives; and a Zoom Feature. Users also can view iPod-video content from the Engage Console’s integrated screen, or from the Inspire Console with an optional 17-inch Attachable TV. The Achieve Console features a user-friendly amber LED display and the six most commonly used Life Fitness workouts.

Featuring sophisticated, sculptural forms and a chic silver and gray palette, the Platinum Club Series Lifecycle Bikes are designed with a discerning eye for style and fitness. The carefully designed seat provides enhanced comfort and better thigh clearance, and newly designed pedals come equipped with a unique ski boot-style adjustment mechanism and quick release to allow the rider tractability and restraint. The Recumbent Lifecycle Bike features a comfortable step-through design. Riders also have the option of selecting the new deluxe armrests or the standard handlebars, both of which offer at-your-fingertips workout resistance controls and feature Lifepulse digital contact heart rate monitoring sensors.
