Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry Rasheed. Nearly two decades later, a friendship grows between Mariam and a local teenager, Laila, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter. When the Taliban take over, life becomes a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear. Yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, and lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism.

the writer takes us through a beautiful journey of pain, hope, disappointment, love, cruelty, friendship and finally hope again.it paints a vivid picture of the cruelty that afghan women went through before and during the taliban regime.how a women who experienced only grief ,pain ,sorrow n disappointment throughout her life can still stand n fight for another women's well being, even by putting her own life at stake.its a very beautiful touching n and gripping story..one which wil stay with you forever..
