The Winner Stands Alone is the enthralling new novel by the incomparable Paulo Coelho. The story is set during the Cannes International Film Festival and the entire action plays out over 24 hours. Igor is a wealthy Russian businessman. His wife Ewa left him two years ago and Igor has never really come to terms with their break up, especially as Ewa is now remarried to a famous fashion designer, Hamid Hussein. Igor is insanely jealous and when Ewa left him he told her that he would destroy 'whole worlds' in order to get her back, and he intends to keep his promise…Igor has followed Ewa and her new husband to Cannes and his plan is to cause as much violence and destruction as possible until Ewa realises how much he loves her and comes back to him. Ewa loved Igor but she was absolutely terrified of him. She knows that Igor has killed people in the past when he was a soldier, but she also knows a dark secret - that he once cold bloodedly murdered a beggar who was bothering them in a restaurant. Igor is clearly unhinged and he will stop at nothing to regain her love and so he goes on a ruthless killing spree until he tracks down Ewa...The star-studded film festival acts as a backdrop to Igor's maniacal murdering spree and we are ntroduced to various characters along the way, all of whom are desperately trying to get their big break in the shallow world of show business; Gabriela a young and naive actress who is being exploited by her agent and Jasmine a troubled young Rwandan refugee working as a model. The Winner Stands Alone is a gripping, fast-paced thriller, and Coelho cleverly weaves in elements of social satire, poking fun at our celebrity and money obsessed culture.

I am an intense fan of Paulo Coelho, I believe he is a novelist with great sense of using words and the visions to explain the scenes and the situations, i dont feel as Iam reading a novel , I feel as Iam watching a movie, it goes through in front of my eyes, characters are explained and defined so beautifuly that we actuialy tend to make a picture of those chatraters in our mind and start visualising them.

I have read Alchemist, Brida, Eleven minutes, also. Today only I have bought The winner stands alone, till now I have liked eleven minutes the most. I believe its the most beautifully written novel till now.But after reading the synopsis of The winner stands alone , i think its going to be one of my favourites, hope so, subject line is realy thrilling , the person trying to get back his love out of the glimpse of glamour, fashion and fame. good subject, I am looking forward to finish it soon, i'll come back with my reviews

I'm a great fan of Paulo Coelho, having read some of his other books like the Alchemist. This motivated me to pick up The Winner Stands Alone. Paulo Coelho is certainly a fantastic writer and he puts in the best of his efforts to create a story of power, glamour and manipulation in the glamour and film industry.

The story is about Igor, an extremely powerful Russian Entrepreneur who sets out to get his ex-wife Ewa back from well-known fashion designer Hamid Hussain. His methods are not legitimate at all, as he wants to achieve this motive by ‘destroying worlds’, or in rather simple terms, by murdering people.

The story is set in the background of the Cannes Film festival and winds from start to finish in a matter of just 24 hours. Within this short time-frame, we are introduced to a number of characters in the plot, and for some, this can be quite heavy to follow through the narrative.

Nevertheless, with the book has all the elements of a fast-paced plot coupled with Coelho's literary style of rumination and reflection. The Winner Stands Alone is a superb narrative about the lives of the rich and famous and the superficial nature of their achievements. In the foreword of the book, Coelho’s describes the book as a 'crude portrait' of the present times.

The book makes the reader think hard about how much is the limit to excess and what are the boundaries of vanity in the world of glamour and fashion. Most people in today's world believe that a world full of money and fame is the right dispensation for their miseries, but Coelho thoughtfully explores the world of the superrich in this novel.

I do feel that sometimes the author's rambling and philosophising can put you off, but nevertheless it is a good read. I recommend that you read it in a single go. I will certainly read more of Coelho's books in the future.
